If you are a university postgraduate student, you have probably thought at least once about the social value of your research work. Moreover, you may have considered the possibility of commercializing the results of your studies.
If this sounds like you, then this course is definitely worth your attention!
The main modules of Academic Entrepreneurship for PhD students typically revolve around the intersection of academic research and entrepreneurial practice. For PhD students, the focus is often on translating their academic knowledge, research findings, and innovations into viable entrepreneurial ventures or contributing to the entrepreneurial ecosystem. The course starts with an entrepreneurial mindset and skill development module, in which the task is cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset, including adaptability, creativity, and resilience. The next module will study leadership and management tools in an entrepreneurial context, especially within a university environment, to serve networking, partnership-building, and leveraging university resources for entrepreneurial success.
The students will learn how to turn academic work into a start-up or business model. The next module explains converting academic research into products, services, or technologies with market potential. The next module will emphasize commercial and societal impact and how research can address real-world problems, contribute to societal development, and evaluate academic entrepreneurship's societal and economic impact, including ethical considerations and responsible innovation. The following module deals with Innovation and Knowledge Transfer based on strategies for transferring knowledge from academia to industry, government, and society; developing innovation ecosystems within academic settings that support entrepreneurship, such as incubators and accelerators; and collaboration between universities and industries to foster applied research and technology transfer. Students will also become familiar with intellectual property (IP) management, patents, and licensing. Building a sustainable business model from academic innovations is the topic of the next module. The last module is about Funding and Investment, identifying and securing funding sources for academic-driven entrepreneurial ventures (e.g., venture capital, grants, crowdfunding),understanding the venture capital landscape, pitching to investors, and business financing for PhD-led startups.
For PhD students, this Course is not just about starting a business but also about developing a mindset that sees academic knowledge as a resource for innovation, societal benefit, and economic development.
