The current linear industrial economy, transforming natural resources into waste, faces inefficiency, resource scarcity, and environmental threats. Addressing these issues, the circular economy promotes sharing, leasing, reusing, and recycling to extend product life cycles, close material loops, and preserve value. This seminar explores the ethical and behavioral aspects of transitioning to a circular economy, emphasizing business and consumer responsibilities, cooperation, institutional frameworks, and sustainable development. Scheduled over five months, the seminar combines synchronous and asynchronous formats, featuring an introductory lecture, group research projects, and presentations. Flexibility is provided through live and recorded sessions, fostering student engagement and understanding.

The following course/module was developed at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg.

Learning outcomes / Competencies:

  • Conceptual Understanding: Students will acquire a comprehensive understanding of the circular economy model, including its principles, mechanisms, and the ethical considerations associated with transitioning from a linear to a circular system.
  • Analytical Skills: Through group research projects, students will develop analytical skills in exploring the intersection of circular economy and business ethics. They will critically assess the responsibilities of businesses and consumers, identify opportunities for cooperation, and evaluate the effectiveness of institutional frameworks.
