This course delves into advanced engineering aspects, focusing on design strategies and material laws. Participants will explore apparatus and process design methodologies, unit operation analysis, and process equipment evaluation. The curriculum covers conceptual design, emphasizing functionality and innovative principles like parallelizing and serializing. Material laws such as suspension rheology, solids mechanics, and agglomerate durability will be studied, enabling comprehension of complex material behaviors. Additionally, the course addresses auxiliary equipment like mixing vessels, gas cleaning through filters, settlers, liquid filters, and membranes, providing a comprehensive understanding of the diverse equipment and technologies employed in engineering processes.

The following course/module was developed at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg.

Learning outcomes / Competencies:

  • Develop Engineering Thinking: Acquire a robust engineering mindset, enabling (mineral) process engineers to approach complex challenges systematically and innovatively.
  • Mechanical-Process Synthesis: Integrate mechanical engineering methodologies with process laws, equipping students with the ability to synthesize unit operations within apparatus designs effectively.
  • Unit-Operation Analysis: Gain skills to deconstruct and analyze unit operations within various apparatus, understanding their construction and functioning for enhanced process optimization.
  • Material Behavior Understanding: Comprehend material laws governing suspensions, wet and dry powders, and particle beds, facilitating an in-depth grasp of material behaviors crucial for designing efficient processes.
  • Auxiliary Equipment Proficiency: Explore essential auxiliary units including pumps, gas filters, mixing vessels, and industrial wastewater technology, providing practical insights into the implementation of supporting systems within engineering processes.
