The practical laboratory course in the discipline "Cutting theory" aims to enrich students' knowledge of workpiece material machining. The course aims to form a systematic approach to solving actual tasks to determine the basic physical parameters of the cutting processes and develop methods for determining rational cutting parameters to increase machining productivity and reduce its cost. Another aspect emphasised in the course was the determination of cutting tool materials and geometry and their effect on the chip formation mechanism and tool wear. The third part of the course deals with learning the physical aspects of cutting progress, namely thermal and mechanical aspects, with a focus on the research methodology of their evaluation.
The following course/module was developed at the Sumy State University (Ukraine).
Learning outcomes / Competencies:
Knowledge
1) Mastering a systematic approach to the process of studying the methods of machining, a set of movements for carrying out the cutting process.
2) Cutting process dynamics and thermal phenomena during machining.
3) Features of various types of machining.
Skills
1) Mastering the methodological apparatus of “Cutting theory” in techniques of measurement of tool wear, cutting temperature and cutting force.
2) To apply modern methods and technical means when solving practical problems of evaluation of cutting tools and cutting parameters.
3) Definition of basic parameters of the chip formation process, wear mechanisms and built-up formation during machining.
