Geomonitoring
The lecture introduces to applications and to the methodological approach of geomonitoring. Starting on the basis of measurement and data acquisition techniques it discusses monitoring design aspects and statistical and model-based inference strategies. The aim is to infer an understanding of geo-processes and their relevant spatio-temporal dynamics, including change detection. Topical application in the context of resource extraction impact- and environmental impact monitoring on different scales in time and space will be discussed and analysed. An introduction to satellite-based radar interferometry and its applications in ground movement monitoring will be provided.
The following course/module was developed at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg.
Learning outcomes / Competencies:
- Integrated Expertise: Integrate geodetic, geotechnical, and remote sensing knowledge with an understanding of geogenic and anthropogenic processes, allowing them to construct comprehensive monitoring strategies tailored to spatial, temporal, and spatio-temporal dynamics.
- Conceptual Design: Develop proficient skills in conceptualizing monitoring plans that effectively capture and assess target processes, leveraging their knowledge to create reliable and adaptive monitoring frameworks.
- Critical Analysis: Demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate monitoring concepts, identifying strengths, weaknesses, and potential refinements in order to optimize monitoring efficiency and accuracy.
- Interpretation of Results: Utilize their understanding of geodetic and geotechnical measurements, coupled with insights into geogenic and anthropogenic processes, to interpret monitoring outcomes, extracting meaningful information and insights.
- Effective Communication: Translate monitoring results into meaningful insights through effective communication, enabling them to convey their analyses to diverse stakeholders and contribute to informed decision-making in various fields reliant on spatial and temporal process monitoring.
