Old Mining

This course provides an overview of old mining and its environmental and technical challenges. Topics include the legal framework, exploration methods, and approaches for assessment, remediation, and securing of former mining sites. Special attention is given to regional issues in Saxony, such as lignite open-pit mines and uranium mining. The course also covers water management in flooded underground mines and presents selected international case studies.

Learning outcomes / Competencies:

Students become familiar with topics of environmental geotechnics. They know the relevance and consequences of abandoned contaminated sites, waste disposal and old mining. They understand the respective processes and can discuss and plan mitigation measures.
