Project 5050 is a cross-disciplinary Ukrainian-German learning initiative building on the TUBAFdigital/EdUp project, uniting students and faculty from TUBAF and Dnipro National Technical University (DniproTech) in geosciences, history, marketing, and academic English. The project explores the history of academic exchange between both universities that goes back to the late 19th century. Now, Project 5050 renews this legacy through a hybrid format combining Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) and a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP). The students work in interdisciplinary groups to explore past and current historical connections between Dnipro and Freiberg: One focus will lie on Prof. Joseph Tanatar, a Dnipro Mining School graduate in geosciences, who visited TUBAF after his graduation and later founded key Ukrainian research institutions.
A hybrid kick-off on April 16, 2026, launched seven weeks of collaborative work across four work packages: researching Tanatar’s scientific legacy, digitizing archival records, studying the historical “blowpipe” method, and developing a public exhibition. Ukrainian students and researchers will visit Freiberg for in-person collaboration.
At TUBAF, the project integrates into a technical English module, promoting English as a Lingua Franca for international collaboration. Part of the COIL-Eng StIL Freiraum 2026 initiative, it strengthens TUBAF’s internationalization. TUBAFdigital supports content development, exhibition organization, and study visits. Project 5050 celebrates shared history while fostering innovation, interdisciplinary learning, and enduring academic ties between Freiberg and Dnipro.
