This course offers an in-depth exploration of particle technology, covering diverse aspects of particle characterization. Topics include particle size distribution, mixing of particle size distributions, and separation techniques. Students will delve into micro processes like sedimentation, flow through porous media, and particle-particle interactions, encompassing forces such as van-der-Waals, electrostatic, and capillary forces. The course also delves into breakage laws and presents case studies in filtration, sedimentation, agglomeration, classification, and comminution. By combining theoretical knowledge with practical applications, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of particle behavior and technology, equipping them with skills applicable in various industries.

The following course/module was developed at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg.

Learning outcomes / Competencies:

  • Solidify Fundamentals: Reinforce their understanding of particle technology's foundational principles, recalling core concepts essential for effective particle behavior analysis and manipulation.
  • Scientific and Technological Calculations: Develop proficiency in scientific and technological calculations related to particle size distributions and micro-processes, enabling accurate assessment and prediction of particle behavior.
  • Micro-process Application: Apply micro-process theories to real-world scenarios, utilizing specialized exercises to translate theoretical knowledge into practical solutions for designing and describing process equipment.
  • Process Equipment Design: Utilize fundamental approaches to describe and design process equipment, employing micro-processes as a basis to optimize equipment functionality and efficiency.
  • Case Study Application: Enhance problem-solving skills by engaging with case studies, learning to apply theoretical concepts to real-world situations, and effectively designing solutions for challenges in filtration, sedimentation, agglomeration, classification, and comminution.
